Summary The article "Current Moderation Issue of Technology Use in Classroom's and Solutions(2021)" by writer and teacher Zach Hughes, is about several modern issues involving computers in the the K-12 environment. The growth and dependency on computers in classrooms is proving to create some worrying problems for our youth. Using computers as a rewards too often cause students to "opt-out" or "choose not to participate in the class, either because they do not want to try or because they don’t know how to succeed and don’t want to risk failing”. Placing a computer in front of a child can sometimes be more of a distraction than anything as students go on other non-educational websites or figure out how to get past the school's "website barriers". This just makes choosing the wrong choice easier and adds on to the effects of "nature-deficit disorder"- a fake disorder meaning that kids are not going outside enough. Students are not spending enough time in nature, and it's no wonder, because all they see is adults who are also tech-addicted. Technology should be used to empower students and help for research, creativity, and communication. For that reason, Hughes is for using computers but in a more responsible way. He lists 6 solutions to mitigate the negative effects of overused technology. If computers are used sparingly, students are given clear instructions and time limits to avoid opt-out, adults become better role-models, good choices are made easy, nature is brought into the classroom when possible, and technology is used to empower an active stance, students will become better learners through technology. How does it relate to our classroom? In our technology class, one of our goals is to figure out the best ways to implement tech in our future classrooms. This article gives a breakdown of what you should and should not do as a teacher in this age of growing dependency on laptops and technology for students. He gives his experience as both a current teacher and back when he was student-teaching, so it is very relevant today. We must learn to teach using technology without having our students “opt-out”. Plus it gives 2 resources to help with productivity, which you might want to look into. A few questions for YOU

Hi! I really liked your blog because the usage of technology has a huge potential of not being of good use to students. Kids are easily able to access blocked websites by simply asking a friend, or a friend of a friend. I would say technology is equally as positive as it is negative. Through technology, we get more insight on other cultures and information instead of just depending on books that don't give us the visual evidence of those spoken of in it existing. For example, seeing pictures on social media of different people across the world is far more effective than reading about because we know that that person or place exists. However, the dependency on technology can also be harmful like you mentioned. Spending time in nature is super important because sitting in front of a computer or being on you phone all the time is super depressing. Why be sad when you can enjoy being outside instead? Even if it is sitting in your own backyard, it is far better than being stuck inside. Great article and blog!

I completely agree! Technology has the potential to be good or bad. As the use of computers in the classroom continues to grow, we as teachers must guide our students to use the internet and technology correctly; Which sites to avoid versus sites that are chock full of educational resources. Keeping them on task while working is tough, but possible and allowing their minds and eyes to rest from the screens by going out into nature is a wonderful way to keep their minds fresh. Thank you for your contribution!

Hello Isabella ! First of all thank you for sharing this article. I think that you made a good choice choosing this one since is something that it has to be talk about. I personally feel that technology has a lot of positive outcomes like allowing students to learn in different forms, it is an easy way to access information, there are a lot of good apps for learning and allows students to collaborate with each other BUT as you mentioned putting a child infront of a computer all day can be a more harmful than beneficial. Kids already spend so much time in their phones playing useless games and watching movies/cartoons that adding extra screen time during school time seems a little too much. I think the key is balance ! Yes technology is great but we have to learn how to manage it properly.

Thank you for your input:) YES! Balance in everything we do is key. Because the web has so much potential for students to collaborate and explore, it would be a waste not to use it. Let kids rest, play, have their freedom aside from technology, and then get them back to the task at hand.

Technology is a slippery slope there're many good things about it but they're also bad. Trying to find a good balance between this will be hard. By making sure that technology isn't the main focus of your future class and only using gets in certain activities. We have a clear purpose of how to use technology in the classroom and not for everything but for certain items.

Very well said! The more attentive and clear we are about how we want students to complete assignments with technology, the more in tune they will be with the lesson.

I think that the first question is such a tricky one because it has so many pros and cons for k-12 school use purposes. It can be such an easy access for students to find information and learn new skills! However, students may become distracted by other sites on the school computers that shifts their focus from learning. In addition, I think it is important for students to not depend on technology too much since can hurt them socially and academically. I think that if there was no pandemic, technology would not have been the way it is now since everyone would be allowed to be in the same room. However, I do think that the pandemic just sped up the dependency on technology faster since its becoming more prominent over the years.

You brought up a really interesting perspective with the oncoming of COVID. There's a huge contrast to how technology was used and how often. Now we use it everyday all throughout our classes. In one way, it's amazing we don't have to commute and have all the resources at our fingertips, but on the other hand we face physical and maybe even mental deterioration and the lack of real communication. What a twist.

This is a super important topic to bring up! As someone who had technology available in school, I definitely wasn't always on task and found a way to download Minecraft instead. While technology can bring so much good to the world and classmates, there are downsides that need to be addressed and tackled. Setting boundaries for students to create a good balance is important in keeping an engaged and on task.

Yes boundaries! Goodness, I was a student who got distracted so easily as well. It was really when fun activities incorporated with learning-with or without use of tech- were involved that they had my full attention.
