Why I Chose This Work
I chose to do a gallery on the work of Frida Khalo (1907-1953). Her focus on self-identity through her culture, disability, family, and sexual orientation caught my attention in my previous art history classes. In Art History 112, Latin American Arts and Architecture, we watched a movie about Frida Khalo that moved me, because it embodied the struggles of a Mexican, disabled, bi woman woven and stuck between cultures. As a young adult, self-identity has always been a key struggle and theme throughout my daily life. Her struggles stayed with me when I studied her paintings as I relate to her as a Mexican-American woman, so I thought Frida Khalo would be the prime subject for my gallery. |
